Whether it’s from sitting for long hours in front of a computer or waking up with tight muscles from poor sleep posture, we’ve all experienced some form of shoulder and neck tension in our day-to-day lives. Sometimes prolonged mental stress and a busy lifestyle can also build up tightness in the muscles over time. This continues on to cause severe discomfort in the upper back, neck and shoulders which can disrupt your day or even sleeping. It helps to practice some simple stretching exercises regularly to correct any tension problems.
If for any reason you can’t get a massage right away, why not try a stress-relieving shoulder stretch using a towel; great for releasing tension around the shoulder blades.
Start with holding a towel behind your back (video illustration below)
Place it diagonally with one arm at the top behind your shoulder and the other arm grabbing the bottom of the towel at your waist.
Flex your elbow down and pull with the bottom arm.
Do not hold the stretch – moving up and down is key to encourage flexibility in your shoulders.
