Lower back pain is one of the leading causes of job disability in the world. About 1 in 10 people suffer from some form of low back pain and for many the condition becomes chronic.
Now, a recent study published in the journal of Pain Medicine finds that massage therapy may provide lasting relief for chronic lower back pain. The small study involving 104 patients was conducted during a period of 24 weeks by researchers at the School of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences at Indiana University-Purdue. Their results after 24 weeks showed clinical improvement of the patients symptoms with 75 percent of the participants experiencing significant improvements.
One of the leading professors in the study, Niki Munk, expressed that their findings can give primary care providers the confidence to tell patients with chronic low back pain to try massage. She also recommended more research in the area including a cost-benefit analysis explaining that: “The fact of the matter is that chronic lower back pain is very complex and often requires a maintenance-type approach versus a short-term intervention option”.
